Topic 1

In many cities, there is little control on the design and construction of new houses. Some people think that people can choose to build houses in their own styles instead of building them with the same as the old house style in local areas. Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?

VOCABULARIES

  • modern constructions = new buildings
  • preserve traditional and cultural values
  • boost tourism
  • construct = build (v)
  • traditional architectural styles
  • popular tourist destination
  • have the right to
  • make their own decisions
  • when it comes to
  • violate (v)
  • be forced to
  • mirror past architectural standards

SAMPLE

It is argued that the architectural style of new buildings should be the same as that of old buildings in local areas, while others believe that people should be free to design their own house the way they prefer. I personally agree with the second group.

On the one hand, the primary reason why some people think that modern constructions should follow the style of the old ones in local areas is that this helps preserve traditional and cultural values, which could boost tourism in these areas. Take Hoi An, which is one of the most famous ancient cities in Vietnam, as an example. Local people in this city are encouraged to preserve their old houses or construct new houses in traditional architectural styles. As a result, Hoi An has become a popular tourist destination that attracts millions of tourists on an annual basis.

On the other hand, I would argue that people should have the right to make their own decisions when it comes to building their own house. The first reason is that many people do not like the style of old buildings in their neighbourhood. Their rights would be violated if they were forced to live in a house that they do not feel comfortable about the design. Another reason that needs to be mentioned is cost. It would be much cheaper to build a modern simple house rather than one which has to mirror past architectural standards.

In conclusion, although some people say that the design and construction of modern and traditional buildings should be the same, I personally believe that the owners should be allowed to decide the way their own house will be built.

Topic 3

Some people think that the best way to increase road safety is to increase the minimum legal age, for driving cars or riding motorbikes. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

VOCABULARIES

  • Increase the minium legal driving age = raise the driving age
  • Reduce traffic accidents
  • Improve the safety of roads = ensure road traffic safety
  • Careless driving
  • The serious consequences of
  • Take driving seriously
  • Drive without a driving licence
  • Impose more severe punishments on somebody
  • Commit driving offences
  • A longer prison sentence
  • Very serious ofences
  • Run a red light
  • Drive without a helmet
  • Prevent somebody from doing something

SAMPLE

It is believed that raising the minimum driving age is the most effective method to improve road safety. While I accept that this approach has some effects in the short term, I believe that a longer-term and better solution is to impose stricter punishments for driving offences.

I think that increasing the minimum legal driving age can help reduce traffic accidents, thus improving the safety of roads. This is because a large number of traffic incidents are caused by young people’s careless driving. Many of them are not mature enough to fully understand the serious consequences of their actions or to be responsible for what they caused. Raising the driving age, therefore, can make sure that the youngest drivers are mature enough to take driving seriously and to protect their own lives and other people’s lives when driving.

In my opinion, however, this approach is only effective to a limited extent, due to the fact that nowadays many youngsters still drive without a driving licence. So, a more effective way to ensure road traffic safety is to impose more severe punishments on those who commit driving offences. For example, a longer prison sentence could be given for very serious offences and a heavier fine could be imposed for running a red light or driving without a helmet. These punishments could help deter potential offenders and prevent people from re-offending.

In conclusion, I believe that introducing stricter regulations for driving offences is a much better measure to increase road safety in comparison with increasing the minimum driving age.

Topic 4

  • Modern technology devices
  • Experienced scientists
  • It takes + time + for somebody + to do something
  • Address/solve/tackle/deal with/mitigate
  • Energy-efficient household items

SAMPLE

It is believed that only governments have the power to solve environmental problems that are posing serious threats to today’s world. However, I think that protecting the earth is the responsibility of both governments and individuals.

It is true that some environmental issues are too big for individuals to deal with. In order for serious problems, such as global warming, prolonged droughts, violent storms or other extreme weather events, to be effectively addressed, it requires the efforts and cooperation of politicians and large environmental organisations. This is because solving such problems requires special equipment, the use of modern technological devices and large numbers of experienced scientists to work together. For instance, it takes years for researchers to collect various samples and analyse huge amounts of data in order to know the major causes of global warming, and to help them find the most effective solutions to tackle this problem. Only governments can have sufficient funds and resources to invest in this.

However, I believe that individuals also need to take responsibility for environmental protection. As individuals, we can help in various ways, such as recycling more, buying more energy-efficient household items or planting more trees in our gardens. I think that without the cooperation of both politicians and individuals, environmental issues will never be effectively tackled. For example, if farmers continue to burn forests for their own purposes, regardless of the government’s regulations, the problem of climate change will never be successfully mitigated.

In conclusion, for the reasons mentioned above, I believe that protecting the environment is the obligation of both politicians and individuals.

Topic 5

New parents should attend parenting courses to ensure the growth of their children. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

VOCABULARIES

  • Parenting courses/classes
  • Provide sb with in-depth knowledge about
  • At different developmental stages
  • Have a better understanding of
  • Be equipped with
  • Basic medical training/first-aid training
  • Emergency situations
  • Have a high fever
  • Have a breathing issue
  • Be compulsory/be mandatory
  • Be required to do st/be forced to do st
  • Struggle financially
  • Adversely affect
  • Make end meet

SAMPLE

One of parents’ most important responsibilities is perhaps taking good care of their offspring. It is believed that it should be compulsory for all mums and dads to take parenting courses so that they are better prepared for parenthood. While I accept that such classes are beneficial, I do not agree that they should be mandatory.

On the one hand, parents would benefit a great deal from parenting classes. First, such courses provide mothers and fathers with in-depth knowledge about how to raise a kid at different developmental stages. Parents who decide to take parenting courses will have a better understanding of their children’s needs; hence, they can take the best care of them. Second, mums and dads in parenting classes are equipped with basic medical training to deal with emergency situations more effectively. For instance, first aid training teaches parents what to do if their child has a high fever or a breathing issue.

Despite such benefits of taking part in parenting courses or workshops, I believe that they should not be compulsory. This is because many parents, especially those who struggle financially, have to work overtime, in the evenings or even at weekends, just to make ends meet. Forcing them to attend those classes would adversely affect their work and their lives. Therefore, I think that parents should be free to decide whether or not they want to participate in those courses instead of being forced to do so.

In conclusion, in spite of some benefits that parenting classes offer, I believe that they should be optional rather than compulsory.

  • Sophisticated computer programs
  • Cancer treatment

SAMPLE

It is believed that these days, thanks to various advances and breakthroughs in science and technology, we no longer need to use products from animals, such as food, clothing items or even medicine. I completely agree with this idea.

Many studies show that a plant-based diet not only provides sufficient nutrients for our body to function normally, but also helps us prevent various potential health issues such as diabetes, high blood pressure or heart attacks. My grandfather is a good case in point. He has been a vegetarian for over 60 years and he is still in good health at the age of 80. In terms of clothing, I strongly believe that it is not necessary to sacrifice an animal’s life for a jacket or a dress. These days, artificial fur and high-quality synthesised fabric are being used to replace animals’ fur or other body parts.

Animal testing has played an essential role in the medical field. In recent years, however, with the development of technology, we can replace animal experimentations with sophisticated computer programs that could provide more accurate results. For instance, computer-based testing has been used to test the safety of new drugs or cancer treatments and has proved effective. It is, therefore, no longer necessary to use animals for new medicine testing or treatments.

In conclusion, for the reasons mentioned above, I believe that products made by killing animals such as food, clothing or medicine are no longer necessities due to the fact that they can be replaced by vegetarian food, artificial clothing materials or computer simulations.
